Slander? Or just Republicans being silly again? Does anyone really care?
We have seen plenty of Republican-on-Republican tension this week. The failed healthcare bill was a direct result of two things, a horrible bill being put forward by the Trump administration and a party of disunity in disarray. While the disagreement about this issue is out in the open, plain for everyone to see, another Republican vs. Republican feud has emerged.
Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas Governor and failed Republican presidential candidate, is in the news for insinuating that fellow Republican Lindsey Graham is gay.
In a radio interview with Laura Ingraham, Huckabee is recorded saying:
“I’m very disappointed in Lindsey. I sometimes wonder what uniform he puts on each morning when goes out to the field to play, and I’m not just talking about the partisan uniform.”
The Young Turks pointed this out this (nastily intended) comment on a recent clip for YouTube. The hosts discuss Huckabee’s incredibly archaic comment and use the old Seinfeld line:
“Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”
Graham’s sexuality has been brought into question in the past with strong denials. Speculation about his sexuality has perhaps been based on the fact he has never married and rumors have circulated for years.
The fact that in 2017, Huckabee believes calling Graham gay is some kind of slur, or even relevant to what sort of politician he may be, is more than disappointing.
In 2010 Graham made the following denial:
“I know it’s really gonna upset a lot of gay men — I’m sure hundreds of ’em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge — but I ain’t available. I ain’t gay. Sorry.”
Both Huckabee and Graham have participated in anti-gay political motions in the past. Huckabee vehemently opposed same sex marriage under Obama, while Graham voted for the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.
This is just more evidence of trouble in paradise among Republicans. It is a house divided.
