The father of one of one racist who marched Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, has denounced his son after the young man appeared on national news spouting hatred, Raw Story reports.

Father Puts Racist Son In His Place

In a letter published in North Dakota’s Inforum, Pierce Tefft wrote that the family really didn’t know where his son Peter picked up such racist views and he added that his son didn’t learn this vile and hateful behavior at home.

“I, along with his siblings, and his entire family, wish to loudly repudiate my son’s vile, hateful and racist rhetoric and actions.”

“I have shared my hearth and home with friends and acquaintances of every race, gender and creed. I have taught all of my children that all men and women are created equal. That we must love each other all the same.”

But he sadly acknowledged that he knows his son is taking a different path.

The Tefft family has kept quiet about this. Until now. The deadly protest convinced Pierce Tefft that remaining silent would be a mistake. He added:

“It was the silence of good people that allowed the Nazis to flourish the first time around, and it is the silence of good people that is allowing them to flourish now.”

And now, Pierce Tefft is a father with a broken heart, notes The Huffington Post.

“Peter Tefft, my son, is not welcome at our family gatherings any longer. I pray my prodigal son will renounce his hateful beliefs and return home. Then and only then will I lay out the feast.”

Pete Tefft’s nephew, Jacob Scott has also released a statement to WDAY TV:

“In brief, we reject him wholly — both him personally, as a vile person who has himself made violent threats against our family, and also his hideous ideology, which we abhor. We are all bleeding-heart liberals who believe in the fundamental equality of all human beings.”

“Peter is a maniac, who has turned away from all of us and gone down some insane rabbit-hole, and turned into a crazy Nazi. He scares us all, we don’t feel safe around him, and we don’t know how he came to be this way. My grandfather feels especially grieved, as though he has failed as a father.”

Peter Tefft used to tell a rather creepy joke, his father recalled in his letter to Inforum.

“The thing about us fascists is, it’s not that we don’t believe in freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want. We’ll just throw you in an oven.”

His dad responded, ending his letter with the following:

“Peter, you will have to shovel our bodies into the oven, too. Please son, renounce the hate, accept and love all.”

Whether this young man will become a decent human being again is difficult to say, and while he was at the protest, he posted this photo of himself standing in front of a statue of Robert E. Lee at the University of Virginia.

It is disgusting and disheartening that this country has become a boiling cauldron of racist hate. We need more brave people like Pierce Tefft to call out the racists. In his actions, I find a little ray of hope.
